Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualifications

Candidates must be able to pass through the Higher Secondary Examination (12th standard) by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or an equivalent exam from an approved council or board. In addition, applicants must have proficiency in the state’s dialect or language.

Age Limit (As of 01 January 2024)

The applicants must be aged between 18 and 40. There is an age-relaxation by 5 years to SC and ST applicants of West Bengal, and up to 45 years for Persons with Disabilities (PWD). Former servicemen can enjoy a higher age relaxation according to the government norms. The age of the Madhyamik (10th standard) or equivalent exam certificate will be taken into consideration.

Selection Process

The process of selecting the Clerk of the Lower Division consists of three phases:

  1. preliminary screening test (Phase-I): This is an OMR-based test that covers Arithmetic, General Knowledge, Computer Proficiency, General Intelligence and English. The test comprises 100 questions, each of which is worth one point. There will be negative markings on mistakes in answers.
  2. Writing Test (Phase-II): Candidates who pass the screening test for preliminary eligibility will be able to sit for the written test that includes topics like Arithmetic, English essay and precis writing, as well as General Knowledge. Each subject has 100 points, and the duration of the test is 3 hours.
  3. The Viva Voce test (Phase-III): Candidates who have passed the written test will be asked to take an viva-voce exam, which has a score of 100. A final merits list is made by analyzing the marks scored during the written exam and the viva-voce test.
