2024 Exam Pattern for CAT

The CAT exam has sections with time limits. This means that applicants must complete each section according to a predetermined order within the specified time frame. There is no way to move between sections or pick a beginning section.

  • Each question is awarded 3 marks.
  • There is a negative marking of -1 for each wrong answer.
  • It is not a crime to skip the questions.
  • Negative marking is only applicable to MCQ questions. There are no markings of negative on TITA (Type in the Answer) questions.

1. Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

This subject is renowned because of its difficulty. Candidates who want to excel should have a solid understanding of the basic concepts in Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Mensuration. The section is comprised of 22 questions ranging from moderate to difficult difficulty.

  • Number Systems: Primordial Factorization and Divisibility Rule, Identifying the Units Place and Tens place, LCM and HCF, Indices and Surds, Cyclicity, Remainders and Base Changes Factorial.

  • Geometry Geometry: Circles, Polygons Triangles Trigonometry line as well Angles, Coordinate Geometry.
  • Algebra The Functions of Groups Inequalities and Modulus, Logarithms, Maxima and Minima Polynomials, Quadratic and Linear Equations Algebraic identities.
  • Modern Mathematics Probability, Permutations, and Combinations, Set Theory, Venn Diagram, AP, GP, HP, Binomial Theorem.

Quantitative Aptitude Weightage:

  • Arithmetic Eight to ten questions (MCQ)
  • Algebra: 5-7 questions (MCQ)
  • Geometry: 1-3 questions (MCQ)
  • Modern Maths: 2-4 questions (MCQ)

2. Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)

This section contains 20 problems to be solved in just 40 minutes. The majority of the questions are given in groups of 3-4.
